In the midst of heated discussions surrounding Donald Trump’s trade policies, a political cartoon from 1925 has re-emerged on LinkedIn, capturing widespread attention. The cartoon, created by esteemed American cartoonist Bob Minor, was initially published in the socialist Chicago newspaper Daily Worker. It depicted the anticipated decline of Western imperialism and the rise of China, India, and Africa, suggesting a shift in global power dynamics away from the dominance of the US, Britain, and France.
The illustration has found renewed relevance in 2024 as it was shared by LinkedIn user RL Narayanan. The caption accompanying the cartoon read: “Almost 100 years ago, famous US cartoonist Bob Minor had a realisation: Western nations ruled the world because they were rich in money and guns. China, India, and Africa were poor in money and guns but rich in people. One day, the balance of power would shift. Minor drew this cartoon in 1925. Now, 99 years later, the people of the world are waking up and realising something has changed.”
The timing of this post coincides with Trump’s tariffs targeting key manufacturing and service economies such as India. This has sparked discussions about whether Minor’s vision is now unfolding into reality. Narayanan’s post highlights how BRICS nations are shaping a multipolar world, representing 40% of the global population and a $30 trillion GDP.
Narayanan also quoted Chanakya to provide historical perspective: “Before you start a war, count the cost of victory and the cost of the enemy’s revenge.” He emphasized that strategic missteps against rising powers might win battles but lose eras. The post has generated significant engagement on LinkedIn, with numerous likes, comments, and reshares.
Users have expressed varied reactions to this historical reflection on current events. One user commented on the cyclical nature of power: “The universe also follows the sine curve…everything has to go in both directions.” Another user appreciated the insight shared by Narayanan: “Thanks for sharing this. It is very important to understand and time to realise our strength too.”
