71st National Film Awards: Celebrating Cinema’s Finest Achievements

The 71st National Film Awards have been announced, spotlighting the most outstanding cinematic achievements of 2023. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting unveiled the winners during a press conference held in New Delhi. These prestigious awards recognize films certified by the censor board from January 1 to December 31, 2023, celebrating excellence across various categories.
Rani Mukerji received her first National Award for Best Actress for her role in “Mrs Chatterjee Vs. Norway.” Expressing her gratitude, Mukerji shared her overwhelming joy at this career milestone. She acknowledged the National Award jury for recognizing her work and dedicated the award to all mothers worldwide, emphasizing the power and resilience of motherhood depicted in the film. Mukerji’s win is a testament to her dedication and passion for cinema over her 30-year career.
In a significant highlight, both Shah Rukh Khan and Vikrant Massey earned their first National Awards for Best Actor for their performances in “Jawan” and “12th Fail,” respectively. Massey expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the jury, dedicating his award to marginalized communities. He acknowledged Vidhu Vinod Chopra for the opportunity and shared his excitement about achieving a long-held dream.
Karan Johar’s “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” emerged as a major winner, securing the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment award. The film also won Best Choreography for “Dhindhora Baje Re!” choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. Johar expressed his elation and gratitude for the recognition of a film close to his heart.
Shilpa Rao was honored with the National Award for Best Playback Female Singer for her song “Chaleya” in “Jawan.” Rao expressed her gratitude towards Shah Rukh Khan, Anirudh, and the entire team of “Jawan,” highlighting the special nature of this collaboration.
“Sam Bahadur” won accolades for Best Costume Design by Sachin, Divya, and Nidhhi, as well as Best Film Promoting National Social Values. Director Meghna Gulzar conveyed her pride and honor, acknowledging her parents’ long-awaited joy at this recognition.
Despite controversies, “The Kerala Story” secured the award for Best Cinematography by Prasanthanu Mohapatra. Sudipto Sen was recognized with the Best Direction award, underscoring the film’s artistic achievement.
