UAE-Based Indians Can Now Use UPI Without Indian Numbers

Indian expatriates residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have gained a significant advantage with the recent introduction of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services that do not require an Indian mobile number. This development stems from a new agreement allowing Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to utilize UPI with their international mobile numbers. The initiative is aimed at enhancing financial inclusion and providing greater ease of access for NRIs managing their finances in India.

Previously, NRIs faced challenges in using UPI services due to the requirement of an Indian mobile number linked to their bank accounts. However, with this new arrangement, they can now seamlessly conduct transactions from their Non-Resident External (NRE) and Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts. Major banks such as HDFC and ICICI are participating in this initiative, facilitating a smoother financial experience for Indian expatriates.

This change is particularly beneficial for NRIs who need to manage various domestic expenses in India, such as paying bills and school fees. By enabling transactions through UPI without the need for an Indian phone number, the process becomes more convenient and efficient. This move is expected to significantly improve the financial management capabilities of NRIs, allowing them to handle their obligations in India more effectively.

The adoption of UPI by NRIs in the UAE is a step towards broader financial integration and reflects the growing importance of digital payment solutions in today’s globalized world. It underscores the commitment to providing inclusive financial services that cater to the needs of Indians living abroad, ensuring they remain connected to their home country’s economy.
