India’s Dominant Edgbaston Victory Sparks Team Selection Debate

India achieved a historic victory at Edgbaston, defeating England by 336 runs in a commanding performance. This win marked India’s first-ever triumph at the venue, with Shubman Gill’s leadership and remarkable batting playing a pivotal role. Gill scored 269 and 161, while Akash Deep’s impressive 10-wicket haul was crucial in leveling the series 1-1. The focus now shifts to Lord’s for the third Test starting on July 10, where team selection changes are anticipated. Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the second Test to manage his workload, is set to return for the third Test, as confirmed by captain Shubman Gill. The question remains: who will make way for Bumrah? Akash Deep is expected to retain his place after his standout performance, and Mohammed Siraj is also likely to stay in the lineup after taking seven wickets in the match. According to NDTV Consulting Editor Boria Majumdar, Karun Nair, who scored 31 and 26 in his debut at No. 3, will not be dropped and is expected to have more opportunities. Spin allrounder Washington Sundar contributed significantly with a crucial partnership in the first innings, while Nitish Reddy, despite a modest impact, will continue to be part of the team. Majumdar suggests that Prasidh Krishna might be the player replaced. Krishna’s performance was underwhelming, with figures of 0/72 in 13 overs and 1/39 in 14 overs. He also struggled in the first Test. During England’s first innings on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston, wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith took advantage of Krishna’s bowling, scoring 23 runs in one over. This included four boundaries and a six, highlighting Krishna’s vulnerability. Krishna now reportedly holds the record for the worst economy rate (minimum 500 balls) in Test cricket history, conceding over five runs per over. Previously, Bangladesh’s Shahadat Hossain held this record with an economy rate of 4.16 over his career from 2005 to 2015. Social media users have been critical of Krishna’s performance and highlighted this statistic, although NDTV has not verified it.
