Smriti Irani Discusses Balancing Politics and Acting in Exclusive Interview

In an exclusive interview with Shiv Aroor, Managing Editor at NDTV, Smriti Irani, a former Member of Parliament and renowned actor, shared insights into her dual career as a politician and part-time actor. This conversation took place shortly after the release of the first promotional video for the reboot of “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,” a beloved soap opera that originally aired on Star Plus 25 years ago. Irani is set to reprise her iconic role as Tulsi Virani, a character that has remained a fan favorite over the years.

When asked about her feelings on returning to television as the original TV bahu, Irani confidently stated, “I’m a politician; nothing that you throw at me will make me nervous ever.” She emphasized the significant evolution in television’s perception over the past two and a half decades. According to Irani, the television industry often does not receive the respect it deserves despite its substantial contributions to revenue and cultural impact. She highlighted that last year alone, television generated approximately Rs 30,000 crore in revenue, while OTT platforms contributed around Rs 24,000 crore. Together, these platforms create a market impact of about Rs 55,000 crore.

Irani also discussed how India’s creative industries are pivotal to leveraging the country’s economic and sociocultural potential. She expressed pride in being part of an industry that not only achieves commercial success but also leaves a lasting cultural imprint.

Referring to herself as a “full-time politician, part-time actor,” Irani explained how she has managed to balance her acting commitments with her political duties. She compared her situation to other politicians who juggle multiple roles, such as lawyers or teachers. However, she noted that unlike them, her work often involves being in the spotlight with videographers and makeup artists. Despite these challenges, Irani continues to navigate both worlds successfully.
