In an effort to demonstrate improved civic readiness, Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma shared a self-recorded video from the Minto Bridge underpass, a notorious site for waterlogging during monsoons. The video, released on Wednesday, shows traffic moving smoothly through the underpass despite heavy rains earlier in the evening. This inspection aimed to address public concerns and highlight the government’s effective measures against waterlogging. The Minto Bridge underpass has historically been a symbol of Delhi’s monsoon challenges, with incidents of vehicles getting submerged and even fatalities occurring in past years. To combat these issues, the PWD implemented several pre-emptive strategies this year. These included desilting drains, repairing stormwater lines, and deploying high-capacity pumps at vulnerable locations to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent flooding. In addition to the video, the minister’s office released photographs from other areas prone to waterlogging, such as the Prembari underpass, Ring Road, Saket Metro stretch, and the vicinity of Max Hospital. These images depicted dry and operational conditions, reinforcing claims of improved infrastructure. However, a reality check by NDTV revealed that while Minto Bridge and ITO showed significant improvement, other areas like Barakhamba Road and Ajmeri Gate experienced flooding and traffic congestion. PWD officials attributed these isolated issues to ongoing drainage upgrades in Central Delhi and existing bottlenecks. They assured that pumps were deployed in these zones and traffic personnel were actively managing clogged stretches. Despite these efforts, opposition leader Saurabh Bharadwaj from the Aam Aadmi Party criticized the minister by sharing a video on social media. The footage depicted waterlogged streets near Minister Verma’s official residence after just an hour of rain, questioning the effectiveness of the government’s measures.
