A suspect linked to an anti-ICE attack at the Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado, Texas, was granted a green card under the Biden administration. Daniel Rolando Sanchez-Estrada, 38, is among those charged in connection with the attack, which resulted in an Alvarado police officer being shot in the neck. The officer is expected to recover. Sanchez-Estrada, who previously received DACA status, is the husband of one of the alleged attackers and is named in a criminal complaint involving 10 individuals accused of targeting the detention center.
The suspects face federal charges, including attempted murder of a federal officer and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Sanchez-Estrada was separately charged with conspiracy to tamper with evidence after being arrested by the FBI. The complaint alleges he was seen moving packages from his home to his truck, containing anti-government propaganda titled “Organising for Attack! Insurrectionary Anarchy.” This term refers to a violent subset of anarchism, as noted in articles by the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism and the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.
Sanchez-Estrada entered the U.S. as a teenager in 2001 and was granted DACA status in 2013, renewing it multiple times before receiving a green card in April 2024. He was previously arrested for alleged possession of a controlled substance in 2020, but charges were dismissed.
The attack involved heavily armed individuals luring ICE agents into a trap using fireworks and graffiti. A police officer responding to the scene was shot, prompting agents to seek cover. A criminal complaint details how assailants fired numerous rounds from an AR-15-style rifle before it malfunctioned. Suspect Bradford Morris was apprehended while attempting to flee and admitted involvement through an online group chat.
Authorities discovered additional suspects in military fatigues nearby, equipped with weapons and communication devices. This incident highlights growing tensions toward ICE and Border Patrol agents amid criticisms of immigration policies. A recent ambush on Border Patrol personnel in McAllen, Texas, further underscores these hostilities.
The Department of Homeland Security emphasized that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated and pledged to prosecute offenders fully.
