India’s wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant had to leave the field during the second session of the opening day in the third Test against England at Lord’s after sustaining an injury to his left hand. The incident occurred on Thursday when Pant attempted a dive to intercept a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah, which was directed down the leg side in the 34th over. Despite managing to get his hands on the ball, Pant could not prevent it entirely, allowing England’s Joe Root and Ollie Pope to complete a couple of runs. Following the incident, play was temporarily halted as Pant received medical attention from the Indian support staff. However, he continued to show signs of discomfort, frequently shrugging his hands even after play resumed. Eventually, Pant decided to leave the field after Bumrah’s over concluded, with Dhruv Jurel stepping in as his replacement behind the stumps. Notably, Jurel was not part of the playing XI for this Test match. In a related development, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar made an interesting comparison between Rishabh Pant and Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz. During his visit to Wimbledon, Gavaskar praised Alcaraz for his dynamic and unpredictable style of play, drawing parallels with Pant’s fearless approach on the cricket field. Gavaskar noted that both athletes bring an element of surprise and excitement to their respective sports, which captivates audiences. Gavaskar also shared his personal affinity for Wimbledon, revealing that he often visits the prestigious tennis tournament whenever he is in England during this time of year. He humorously admitted that he frequents Wimbledon more than Lord’s unless India is playing there.
