A tragic incident unfolded aboard a luxury superyacht in the Bahamas, where a 20-year-old South African woman, Paige Bell, was discovered dead. The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) reported that Bell was found with visible injuries in the engine room of the yacht, which was docked at a marina off Harbour Island. The discovery was made on July 3, shortly after Bell was reported missing. Her family later identified her through social media posts.
Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found Bell unresponsive alongside a 39-year-old man, Brigido Muñoz, who had severe injuries to his arms. Police suspect these injuries were self-inflicted in a suicide attempt. Muñoz, a Mexican national and engineer on the yacht, was taken into custody and charged with murder. He appeared in Magistrate Court in Nassau on July 9, where he was denied bail and is scheduled to return to court on November 20.
Bell’s family expressed their devastation over her brutal death. Her sister Chelsey shared their grief on Facebook, noting that their parents were traveling to the Bahamas to bring Paige home and seek justice. The family vowed to pursue every avenue to ensure accountability for her death.
Bell’s former crewmates described her as more than just a colleague; she was considered family. In response to the tragedy, friends and colleagues launched a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $42,000 to assist with travel and legal expenses. The fundraiser also aims to help retrieve Bell’s body. In remembrance of Paige, who would have turned 21 on July 14, her mother encouraged supporters to celebrate her life by enjoying red velvet cake, her favorite dessert.
The RBPF continues its investigation into the murder, though no motive has been disclosed. Harbour Island, where the yacht was docked, is known for its exclusivity and appeal to celebrities and superyachts. Despite the tragic circumstances, the community remains hopeful for justice in Paige Bell’s case.
