A significant fire erupted on four wagons of a goods train carrying diesel near the Tiruvallur railway station early this morning, around 5:30 am. The incident caused widespread panic in the surrounding areas as towering flames and thick black smoke were seen billowing from the affected wagons. The train was en route from Manali to the Tirupati region when it caught fire, prompting immediate evacuation measures for nearby residents as a precaution.
Fire and rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene and managed to bring the fire under control after intense efforts. The presence of highly inflammable diesel posed a significant challenge to the firefighting operations. Superintendent of Police A Srinivasa Perumal assured that rescue teams had taken full control of the situation, confirming that there was no danger to life or damage to surrounding property.
Seema Aggarwal, Chief of Fire Services, stated that additional teams were dispatched to assist in extinguishing the fire due to the complexities involved with diesel. The coordinated efforts of the fire services were crucial in preventing further escalation of the situation.
The fire incident led to disruptions in train services to and from Chennai. Authorities are actively working to restore normalcy, with Southern Railways announcing the cancellation of eight trains departing from Chennai and the diversion of five others. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, as officials strive to determine what led to this hazardous event.
As investigations continue, authorities are focused on ensuring safety measures are reinforced to prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident highlights the critical need for stringent safety protocols when transporting inflammable materials by rail.
