KL Rahul, the stylish Indian opener, achieved a significant milestone on Saturday by becoming only the second Indian batter to score more than one century at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. This remarkable feat places him alongside former middle-order stalwart Dilip Vengsarkar, who had previously set the benchmark with three centuries at this venue in 1979, 1982, and 1986. Rahul reached this landmark during the third day of the third Test against England, marking his place on the prestigious Lord’s honours board.
Rahul’s innings was a masterclass in batting, as he scored exactly 100 runs off 177 balls, including 13 boundaries. His innings was characterized by elegant drives and flicks, with a standout backfoot punch square of the wicket off Brydon Carse. This was Rahul’s second century in the ongoing five-match series, following his impressive performance in the series opener at Leeds.
The third Test saw Rahul reaching his century shortly after lunch with a single off Jofra Archer. However, his celebration was short-lived as he was dismissed by off-spinner Shoaib Bashir immediately after reaching the three-figure mark. Despite this setback, Rahul’s contribution was crucial in a tightly contested series that is currently tied at 1-1.
Scoring a century at Lord’s is considered a prestigious achievement for any cricketer due to its historical significance and challenging conditions. With this century, Rahul joins an exclusive group of ten Indian players who have etched their names on the honours board at what is often referred to as the “Mecca of Cricket.” His first century at this venue came in 2021 when he scored 129 runs in India’s memorable 151-run victory.
Rahul’s achievement not only highlights his skill and temperament but also adds to India’s rich cricketing legacy at one of the sport’s most revered grounds.
