A new book sheds light on the dark past of Bryan Kohberger, the man who admitted to murdering four Idaho students. According to crime novelist James Patterson and investigative journalist Vicky Ward, Kohberger’s criminal activities began years before the tragic events in Moscow, Idaho. The book, “The Idaho Four: An American Tragedy,” reveals that Kohberger engaged in home invasions and burglaries during his teenage years in Pennsylvania to support a heroin addiction. These early crimes laid the groundwork for his later actions, culminating in the brutal murders of four students.
Kohberger’s history of manipulation is further illustrated by accounts from individuals who knew him in Pennsylvania. One such story involves Connie Saba, who recounted how a young Kohberger deceived her into revealing when she would be away from home, allowing him to break in and steal from her. This betrayal was particularly striking given Saba’s kindness towards him. The book highlights Kohberger’s ability to manipulate those around him, a trait that would later manifest in his calculated approach to the Idaho murders.
In July 2023, Kohberger unexpectedly changed his plea, admitting to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. He confessed to planning the killings and entering the off-campus home with the intent to murder. The courtroom was tense as Kohberger showed no emotion while admitting his guilt, a stark contrast to the emotional reactions of his family and the victims’ families present.
At the time of the murders, Kohberger was a criminology student at Washington State University, located just 10 miles from the crime scene. Despite being new to the program, he was already concerned about losing his scholarship. Patterson suggests that Kohberger had no direct connection to the victims but may have targeted Madison Mogen due to personal issues and his struggles with women.
The revelations in “The Idaho Four: An American Tragedy” provide a chilling insight into Kohberger’s life and motives. His early criminal activities and manipulative behavior foreshadowed the tragic events in Idaho. As the legal proceedings continue, this book offers a comprehensive look at how Kohberger’s past shaped his actions, leaving a lasting impact on all those involved.
