Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an investigation into over 100 potential noncitizens suspected of casting illegal ballots in the 2020 and 2022 election cycles. This investigation, announced recently, focuses primarily on Harris County, with additional scrutiny in Guadalupe, Cameron, and Eastland counties. The probe utilizes data from the Texas Secretary of State and was facilitated by an executive order from President Donald Trump. This order enabled the Department of Homeland Security to provide access to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service’s SAVE Database, assisting states in identifying noncitizens who may have voted unlawfully.
Paxton, a Republican candidate in the upcoming Senate primaries against John Cornyn, emphasized the importance of maintaining election integrity. He stated that illegal voting by noncitizens undermines the democratic process and vowed to hold those accountable who violate election laws. Paxton credited President Trump’s executive order for aiding in this effort to protect the ballot box from foreign influence.
In addition to the current investigation, Paxton has also opened a separate inquiry into 33 potential noncitizens allegedly involved in illegal voting during the 2024 general election. This ongoing effort highlights Texas’s commitment to addressing election fraud. Rep. Troy E. Nehls expressed support for these actions, emphasizing the need to safeguard electoral integrity.
The investigation follows a significant update to Texas’s voter rolls, where Governor Greg Abbott announced the removal of 1.1 million individuals in 2024. This move underscores the state’s proactive measures to ensure only eligible voters participate in elections.
The outcome of these investigations could have significant implications for future electoral processes in Texas, reinforcing the state’s stance on preventing illegal voting activities.
