Former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan Passes Away at 101

Veteran CPM Leader VS Achuthanandan Dies at 101

VS Achuthanandan, a prominent figure in Kerala’s political scene and former Chief Minister, passed away at the age of 101. The veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader died on Monday following a prolonged hospitalization. He was admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on June 23 after experiencing a suspected cardiac arrest at his residence. Despite receiving intensive care and ventilator support, Achuthanandan succumbed to his health complications.

Political Leaders Pay Respects

In the wake of his passing, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPM state secretary MV Govindan promptly visited the hospital to console the family and consult with the medical team. Numerous political figures have also gathered at the hospital to honor the late leader, reflecting his significant impact on Kerala’s political landscape.

A Legacy of Leadership and Reform

Achuthanandan’s political journey is marked by his tenure as the Leader of the Opposition from 2001 to 2006, during which he actively challenged the UDF government led by AK Antony. His leadership was instrumental in the CPM-led Left Democratic Front’s victory in 2006, leading to his term as Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011. Known for his populist policies and steadfast principles, Achuthanandan earned respect across party lines.

Challenges and Near Victories

In 2011, Achuthanandan spearheaded the LDF campaign, nearly securing a second term as Chief Minister. However, the Oommen Chandy-led UDF narrowly won with 72 seats in the 140-member Assembly. Despite this setback, Achuthanandan’s influence remained strong within Kerala politics.

Final Years and Personal Life

After stepping down as Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Committee in January 2021, Achuthanandan resided alternately with his son or daughter in Thiruvananthapuram. His passing marks the end of an era for Kerala politics, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and reform.
