Washington has reiterated its claim that the Trump administration played a pivotal role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan. This assertion was made during a United Nations Security Council session, where Ambassador Dorothy Shea emphasized the United States’ commitment to mediating global disputes and fostering peaceful resolutions. The session, held under Pakistan’s presidency, focused on multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
As a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Council, Pakistan holds the presidency for July. During this period, it is spearheading initiatives to promote international peace and security through multilateralism. The country is hosting significant events aimed at enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Ambassador Shea highlighted recent US diplomatic efforts, noting successful de-escalations in conflicts involving Israel and Iran, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and India and Pakistan. She praised these resolutions as examples for other nations embroiled in disputes to follow.
Despite Washington’s claims, India maintains a different narrative regarding the ceasefire with Pakistan. New Delhi asserts that Islamabad initiated the ceasefire request and has consistently rejected any external mediation. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, emphasized that India’s military operations were targeted and non-escalatory, leading to a cessation of activities at Pakistan’s behest.
In addition to addressing South Asian tensions, Washington condemned China’s expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea. Ambassador Shea urged China to comply with the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal ruling under the Law of the Sea Convention. She criticized China’s continued rejection of this ruling and its interference with maritime freedoms in the region.
