Assam Engineer’s Suicide Sparks Investigation into Alleged Workplace Harassment

Tragic Incident in Assam’s Public Works Department

A 30-year-old assistant engineer, Jyotisha Das, working with the Public Works Department (PwD) in Assam, was found dead in her rented accommodation on Tuesday afternoon. The incident has sent shockwaves through the department and raised serious concerns about workplace harassment. Jyotisha Das left behind a suicide note that pointed to intense pressure from her colleagues, specifically naming two senior officials who allegedly coerced her into approving fraudulent bills for incomplete work.

Allegations of Workplace Harassment

In her handwritten note, Jyotisha Das detailed the mental stress she endured due to constant pressure from two senior officials. She accused Dinesh Medhi Sharma, a recently promoted Superintendent Engineer, and Aminul Islam, a Sub-Divisional Officer, of forcing her to clear fake bills. The note revealed her feelings of isolation and lack of guidance at work, contributing to her decision to take such a drastic step.

Family’s Response and Legal Action

Following the tragic event, Jyotisha Das’s family lodged a formal police complaint and filed a First Information Report (FIR). Based on the contents of the suicide note, both Dinesh Medhi Sharma and Aminul Islam have been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide. The arrests underscore the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Government and Police Investigation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The police have stated that they are examining all aspects of the case, including reassessing the work costing related to the alleged fraudulent bills. This investigation aims to uncover any potential misconduct within the department and ensure accountability.

Support for Mental Health

This tragic incident highlights the importance of mental health support in workplaces. Helplines such as Vandrevala Foundation for Mental Health and TISS iCall offer assistance to those in need. It is crucial for individuals experiencing similar pressures to seek help from mental health professionals.
