Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has offered advice to non-Marathi speakers caught in the ongoing language controversy in the state. He suggested that those unfamiliar with Marathi should politely express their intention to learn the language, which could help avoid conflicts. This recommendation comes as tensions over language have intensified and reached the national parliament.
The language debate was further fueled by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s controversial remark, “Marathi logon ko hum yahan patak patak ke marenge,” which translates to “we will soundly thrash Maharashtrians here.” His comment drew immediate backlash from women MPs in Maharashtra, prompting him to retreat with a conciliatory “Jai Maharashtra.”
Ajit Pawar emphasized the importance of respecting the language of one’s state, stating that everyone from Maharashtra to Jammu and Kashmir should take pride in their mother tongue. He expressed concern over the current situation, hinting at the unnecessary escalation of tensions over language issues.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has taken a firm stance on the language issue. The party, known for its aggressive son-of-the-soil movement, has been vocal about its demands for Marathi prominence. Thackeray’s own comments have contributed to the heated atmosphere.
Instances of conflict between Marathi and non-Marathi speakers have been reported, often involving MNS members. In one incident, a man was assaulted by MNS workers for refusing to speak Marathi. Additionally, threats have been made to replace Gujarati signboards with Marathi ones on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has condemned the violence associated with the language dispute, stating that resorting to aggression over language differences is unacceptable. Despite this, Raj Thackeray has expressed pride in his party’s actions.
