Former Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi Hernandez recently applied for the position of head coach for the Indian men’s football team. Despite his illustrious career and managerial experience, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Technical Committee decided not to proceed with his application. Xavi, known for his exceptional skills as a midfielder, had previously managed Barcelona and Qatari club Al-Sadd.
The primary reason for Xavi’s rejection was financial. According to reports from the Times of India, the AIFF could not meet the financial terms required to secure Xavi’s services. This decision came amidst a review of 170 applications for the coaching position, highlighting the competitive nature of the selection process.
Xavi’s managerial career began at Al-Sadd in 2019, where he transitioned from player to coach. He later returned to Barcelona in 2021, taking over from Ronald Koeman during a challenging period for the club. Despite his efforts, Xavi was released in 2024 after a trophyless season, marking an end to his tenure at Barcelona.
The AIFF has shortlisted three candidates for the head coach position: Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine, and Stefan Tarkovic. These candidates were selected after a virtual meeting led by I.M. Vijayan, chairperson of the AIFF Technical Committee. The final decision will be made following an emergency Executive Committee meeting.
The AIFF is set to finalize its decision within a week, aiming to appoint a new head coach who can lead the national team effectively. This appointment comes after Manolo Marquez was relieved of his duties earlier this month.
