Kamal Haasan Joins Rajya Sabha, Takes Oath in Tamil

Kamal Haasan’s Parliamentary Debut

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, leader of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), marked his entry into the Indian Parliament by taking the oath as a Rajya Sabha Member. The ceremony took place on Friday, where Haasan chose to deliver his oath in Tamil, receiving enthusiastic applause from fellow members. This momentous occasion signifies a new chapter in Haasan’s political journey, which began with the formation of his party in 2017.

Unopposed Election to Rajya Sabha

Kamal Haasan was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on June 12, backed by the DMK-led alliance. His election is seen as a strategic move by the alliance to strengthen its representation and influence in the upper house of Parliament. The support from DMK highlights the growing political collaboration between MNM and other regional parties.

Commitment to Serve Tamil Nadu and India

Ahead of his swearing-in, Haasan expressed his commitment to fulfilling his parliamentary duties with honor. He emphasized his dedication to representing both Tamil Nadu and India on a national platform. In an interview with NDTV, he acknowledged the expectations placed upon him and vowed to work earnestly for the betterment of his constituents.

Political Journey and Vision

Kamal Haasan launched MNM with a focus on combating corruption, promoting rural development, and ensuring environmental sustainability. Despite securing around 4% of the vote in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Haasan continued to build his political presence. Although he narrowly lost the Coimbatore South seat in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, his party’s influence has grown.

Alliance with DMK and Future Plans

In a strategic move, MNM chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but instead supported the ruling DMK. This alliance led to the adoption of Haasan’s vision for direct benefit transfers to women, resulting in a flagship program providing Rs 1,000 monthly assistance to eligible women heads of households. Looking ahead, MNM plans to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of the DMK-led coalition.
