Strengthening India-Maldives Relations

During an official banquet in Male, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the enduring and strategic partnership between India and the Maldives. Hosted by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, the event underscored the deep-rooted ties that have existed for centuries. PM Modi highlighted that the Maldives holds a pivotal position in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, reflecting a relationship built on mutual trust and cooperation.

Celebrating Milestones and Shared Heritage

PM Modi’s visit coincided with significant milestones: the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He expressed gratitude for being invited as the Guest of Honour during such a symbolic occasion. The Prime Minister noted that these anniversaries highlight the historical and cultural bonds shared by India and the Maldives, which are as ancient as the monsoon winds and as sweet as Addu Bondi, a traditional Maldivian delicacy.

People-to-People Connections

The Prime Minister also emphasized the strong people-to-people connections that have been nurtured over centuries. He remarked on the cultural similarities, noting that many words in Dhivehi, the Maldivian language, have Indian origins. Additionally, he celebrated the fact that the 10 millionth tourist to visit the Maldives this year was an Indian citizen, symbolizing the close ties between their populations.

Acknowledging Leadership and Achievements

President Muizzu congratulated PM Modi on becoming India’s second-longest-serving Prime Minister in consecutive terms, surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record. This achievement reflects PM Modi’s dedication to public service and his commitment to India’s progress. Notably, he is also recognized as the first non-Congress Prime Minister to achieve this milestone.

Bilateral Cooperation and Development Initiatives

During his two-day visit, PM Modi engaged in bilateral discussions with President Muizzu, resulting in several agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in trade, agriculture, health, and social welfare. These initiatives are expected to provide a significant boost to the Maldives’ development journey, reinforcing its partnership with India.
