Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has sparked a debate by suggesting that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah might retire from Test cricket. Kaif’s comments come amid Bumrah’s ongoing struggles with his workload during the Test series against England. Despite having taken 13 wickets so far, Bumrah’s performance in the Manchester Test has been underwhelming, leading to speculation about his future in the longest format of the game.
Kaif took to social media platform X to express his concerns, noting that Bumrah appeared to be a shadow of his former self during the Manchester Test. He highlighted that Bumrah’s bowling speeds have noticeably decreased, raising questions about his physical condition. Kaif suggested that if Bumrah feels he cannot perform at his best, he might consider stepping away from Test cricket.
During the second session of the Manchester Test, Bumrah was seen clutching his ankle, although he did return to bowl later. This incident has added to concerns about his physical fitness. Prior to the series, India head coach Gautam Gambhir had announced that Bumrah would participate in only three of the five Tests against England as part of workload management efforts.
Kaif’s remarks have prompted discussions about the future composition of the Indian Test team. With key players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin already being managed carefully, the potential absence of Bumrah could significantly impact India’s bowling attack. Fans may need to brace themselves for a future where Bumrah plays a reduced role in Test cricket.
Kaif emphasized that Bumrah is a selfless player who prioritizes team success over personal milestones. If he feels unable to contribute effectively, he might choose to retire from Tests voluntarily. While Kaif hopes his prediction is incorrect, he believes that Bumrah’s current form and fitness issues could lead to such a decision.
