Bengaluru’s renowned Empire restaurant chain is under scrutiny after a recent report from the State Food Laboratory, Public Health Institute, identified safety issues with chicken kebabs served at its Gandhinagar outlet. The inspection, led by Food Safety Officer Ambarish Gowda, involved collecting 2 kilograms of chicken kebab samples from the outlet near Anand Rao Circle on June 27. These samples were then subjected to rigorous testing to ensure compliance with food safety standards.
The laboratory analysis, completed on July 11, revealed that the chicken kebabs failed to meet the safety standards set forth by the Food Product Standards & Food Additives Regulations, 2011. Consequently, the food was declared unsafe under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This finding has raised significant concerns about food safety practices at one of Bengaluru’s popular dining spots.
In light of these findings, the BBMP’s Food Safety and Drug Administration (North Zone) has issued a formal notice to Empire restaurant. The notice grants the establishment 30 days to respond to the allegations. Additionally, the restaurant has been given the option to have a second sample retested at CFTRI in Mysuru, albeit at their own expense.
Shakir, CEO of Empire chain of restaurants, confirmed receipt of the notice from FSSAI but refrained from commenting on specific details. However, he assured that steps are being taken to address the issue, including discontinuing the use of food coloring in their kebabs. This proactive measure reflects Empire’s commitment to ensuring food safety and maintaining customer trust.
