A recent statement by Congress leader Udit Raj has stirred political controversy, drawing sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Raj suggested that Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition, could become the “second Ambedkar” for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). This comparison to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a revered social reformer and the architect of India’s Constitution, has been met with derision from the BJP, which views it as an affront to both Dalits and Ambedkar’s legacy.
The controversy follows Rahul Gandhi’s admission of past oversights during his tenure when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was in power. Gandhi acknowledged that not conducting a caste census was a significant oversight and expressed his commitment to rectifying this mistake. He reflected on his achievements, such as the Land Acquisition Bill and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, while admitting his failure to adequately address OBC issues due to a lack of understanding at the time.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla responded strongly to Udit Raj’s statement, accusing the Congress of disrespecting Dr. Ambedkar. Poonawalla highlighted historical grievances, questioning the Congress’s past actions regarding Ambedkar and reservations. He criticized the party for allegedly prioritizing the Nehru-Gandhi family over other leaders and accused them of attempting to rewrite history by positioning Rahul Gandhi as a successor to Ambedkar.
This exchange underscores ongoing tensions between India’s major political parties over historical narratives and social justice issues. The BJP’s reaction reflects broader concerns about how political legacies are interpreted and leveraged in contemporary politics. As debates over caste representation and historical figures continue, this incident highlights the complexities of addressing social justice within India’s diverse political landscape.
