Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shifts Stance on TRF Terror Designation

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Reverses Position on TRF

In a notable policy shift, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar has expressed support for the United States’ decision to designate The Resistance Front (TRF) as a terrorist organization. This comes after his previous defense of the group, which is linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The TRF had claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in 26 casualties. Despite this claim, Dar initially denied the group’s involvement.

Acknowledging U.S. Sovereignty in Terror Designation

Speaking at an event in Washington, Dar acknowledged the U.S.’s sovereign right to label TRF as a terrorist entity. He stated, “It is a sovereign decision of the United States to designate the TRF. We have no issue. And we welcome, if they have any evidence, that they are involved.” This marks a significant departure from his earlier stance and aligns with international efforts to curb terrorism.

Disputing Links Between TRF and Lashkar-e-Taiba

While supporting the U.S. designation, Dar contested the association between TRF and LeT, asserting that LeT is no longer operational. He emphasized that Pakistan dismantled the group years ago, prosecuting and jailing its members. This statement reflects ongoing tensions regarding Pakistan’s role in counter-terrorism efforts and its relationship with militant groups.

India’s Push for International Recognition of TRF as Terrorist Group

India has been advocating for TRF’s recognition as a terrorist organization since 2023. It has presented evidence to the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee, highlighting TRF’s involvement in attacks across Jammu and Kashmir since its emergence in 2019. India’s designation of TRF under its Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act underscores its commitment to combating terrorism.

Bilateral Relations and Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Dar’s meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio further emphasized Pakistan’s role in regional stability and counter-terrorism. Rubio expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s partnership in these areas while discussing potential trade agreements and collaboration in critical minerals. This dialogue indicates a strengthening of bilateral relations amidst global security concerns.
