President Donald Trump, alongside First Lady Melania Trump, extended their deepest condolences to the family of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a congressional intern tragically killed in a Washington, D.C. shooting. In a letter dated July 17, Trump expressed his sorrow over the “senseless act of violence” that claimed the life of the 21-year-old University of Massachusetts Amherst student. The Trumps conveyed their heartbreak for the entire family and emphasized Eric’s lasting impact through his kindness and dedication.
Eric Tarpinian-Jachym was shot on June 30 around 10:28 p.m. on the 1200 block of 7th Street, Northwest, and succumbed to his injuries on July 1. The Metropolitan Police Department reported that several individuals exited a vehicle and opened fire on a group, inadvertently striking Tarpinian-Jachym, who was not the intended target. An adult female and a 16-year-old male were also injured but survived. As of now, no suspects have been apprehended.
Eric was interning for Rep. Ron Estes, R-Kan., at the time of his death. President Trump highlighted Eric’s commitment to public service and his representation of Kansas’ Fourth Congressional District. The letter praised Eric’s qualities and assured that he would be remembered for his contributions to the nation.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Eric’s mother, Tamara Jachym, shared insights into her son’s life, noting his resilience in overcoming challenges such as severe dyslexia. Despite these adversities, Eric excelled academically and socially, finding acceptance in Washington, D.C., where he was known for his intelligence and genuine demeanor.
The FBI has joined forces with the Metropolitan Police Department in the investigation. A $40,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact them at (202) 727-9099.
