Four hikers were rescued after becoming stranded overnight on Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak. The incident occurred on the Knife Edge trail, known for its challenging terrain and elevation of over 5,000 feet. Baxter State Park officials reported that two separate hiking groups were involved in the incident, which began after dark on Thursday night.
One of the hikers, a woman in her 30s, sustained an unstable knee injury, while the other three hikers were unharmed. Park rangers provided essential supplies, including food, to the stranded hikers on Friday morning. Rescue efforts were initially hampered by low cloud cover, which prevented a Maine Forest Service helicopter from reaching the hikers. Eventually, a Blackhawk helicopter crew successfully completed the rescue by late Friday afternoon.
This rescue follows a tragic incident earlier in June when two hikers, Tim Keiderling and his daughter Esther, were found dead on Mount Katahdin. The mountain’s challenging conditions have highlighted the importance of preparedness and caution for those attempting to navigate its trails.
The recent events underscore the need for hikers to take necessary precautions when exploring difficult trails like Knife Edge. Adequate preparation, including checking weather conditions and ensuring physical readiness, is crucial for safe hiking experiences. Park officials continue to emphasize safety measures to prevent future incidents.
