Montana law enforcement agencies have intensified their search for Michael Paul Brown, a former soldier accused of fatally shooting four individuals at a local bar. The manhunt, which involves multiple agencies including the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, ATF, FBI, and U.S. Marshals, has expanded across the rugged terrain of southwestern Montana. Brown was last seen in “Stump Town,” near Anaconda, a small town with a population of about 9,000. Authorities warn that Brown may be armed with survival gear stolen from a vehicle after the incident.
The tragic event unfolded at the Owl Bar, where Brown allegedly opened fire, killing four locals: Nancy Lauretta Kelley, Daniel Edwin Baillie, David Allen Leach, and Tony Wayne Palm. Kelley worked as a bartender at the establishment, while the other victims were patrons. Brown, who lived next door to the bar, fled the scene shirtless and barefoot but was later spotted near a stolen white Ford F-150 loaded with clothing and camping supplies.
Residents in Anaconda are urged to stay indoors and remain vigilant as the search for Brown continues. The suspect is described as 5-foot-10-inches tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $7,500 reward for information leading to his arrest. Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen has cautioned residents against approaching Brown, labeling him as armed and dangerous.
Brown’s niece, Clare Boyle, revealed that her uncle has struggled with mental health issues for years. She emphasized that his actions were not simply those of an intoxicated individual but rather those of someone battling severe mental illness. Despite family efforts to seek help for him, Brown remains at large.
Brown served as an armor crewman in the U.S. Army from January 2001 to May 2005 and was deployed to Iraq from February 2004 to March 2005. He later joined the Montana National Guard from April 2006 to March 2009. His military background adds complexity to the ongoing search efforts.
