Sharon Stone recently shared her thoughts on the infamous leg-crossing scene from “Basic Instinct,” a moment that has become legendary in film history. Despite having the legal right to remove the scene, Stone chose to keep it, acknowledging its role in her rise to iconic status. She explained to Business Insider that while the scene made her an icon, it did not bring her the respect she had hoped for. Stone revealed that neither she nor director Paul Verhoeven fully understood the impact of the shot at the time, and Verhoeven was initially hesitant to show it to her.
In her memoir, “The Beauty of Living Twice,” Stone detailed her initial reaction to the scene, which could have resulted in an X rating for the film in 1992. She noted that according to her union, the Screen Actors Guild, filming in such a manner was not legal. However, after considering her options, she decided against removing it, recognizing its importance for both the film and her character.
Stone also recounted the challenges she faced in securing the role of Catherine Tramell. Michael Douglas, who played opposite her, was initially reluctant to work with an unknown actress. Their first encounter at the Cannes Film Festival was marked by tension, but this dynamic ultimately contributed to their compelling on-screen chemistry. Despite initial disagreements, Stone and Douglas eventually developed a strong friendship.
Reflecting on her career-defining role, Stone emphasized how the tension between her and Douglas enhanced their performances. She admired Douglas’s talent and acknowledged that their initial friction added depth to their characters’ interactions. Today, Stone regards Douglas as a great friend and credits their collaboration for some of the film’s success.
