Teamsters Leader Sean O’Brien Discusses Rift with Bernie Sanders Post-RNC Speech

Teamsters President Sean O’Brien on Communication Breakdown with Bernie Sanders

Teamsters President Sean O’Brien recently disclosed a significant shift in his relationship with Senator Bernie Sanders following O’Brien’s speech at the 2024 Republican National Convention. Speaking to Bari Weiss of The Free Press, O’Brien revealed that Sanders, who previously collaborated with him on rallies, has ceased communication. This change in dynamics is attributed to O’Brien’s perceived non-endorsement of the Democratic Party, although Sanders has not explicitly stated this as the reason. O’Brien noted that Sanders’ attitude and level of access have notably changed, impacting their professional interactions.

The Impact of Political Decisions on Union Relations

O’Brien’s decision to speak at the Republican National Convention without endorsing any candidate, including former President Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris, has stirred reactions within political circles. Despite reaching out to the Democratic National Committee for a speaking opportunity, O’Brien did not receive a response. This lack of endorsement has been interpreted by some as a betrayal, affecting his rapport with key political figures like Sanders.

Challenges in Legislative Collaboration

The communication breakdown extends to legislative efforts as well. O’Brien mentioned difficulties in collaborating on the Faster Labor Standards Contract Act, a streamlined version of the PRO Act. He expressed frustration over Sanders’ staff being uncooperative, highlighting the challenges unions face when political alliances shift.

Criticism of Kamala Harris’ Approach to Union Endorsements

In addition to discussing Sanders, O’Brien criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for her approach to securing union endorsements. He recounted an incident involving Teamsters leader Joan Corey, who felt pressured by Harris during a photo-op line. Furthermore, during a meeting with the union’s executive board, Harris reportedly answered only four out of sixteen prepared questions, opting instead to deliver a speech. This encounter left O’Brien questioning Harris’ commitment to addressing union concerns.
