Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India later this year, as confirmed by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his visit to Moscow. While the exact dates remain unspecified, reports from Interfax suggest that the visit is likely to occur soon. This visit underscores the enduring relationship between India and Russia, characterized by high-level engagements that have significantly strengthened bilateral ties.
The backdrop of Putin’s visit is marked by escalating tensions between New Delhi and Washington. US President Donald Trump has criticized India for its continued purchase of Russian oil, which he claims supports Moscow’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This accusation has strained trade negotiations between India and the United States. In response, Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on imports from India and threatened further sanctions unless Russia halts its military actions in Ukraine.
India and Russia have maintained a robust trade relationship since the Soviet era, with economic cooperation reaching new heights in recent years. Despite global tensions, India has emerged as a major importer of Russian oil, accounting for approximately 45% of its crude imports by May 2023. This economic partnership remains a cornerstone of their bilateral relations.
In addition to his planned visit to India, President Putin is also expected to meet with President Trump soon. According to Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, both sides are finalizing details for this meeting, with a venue already agreed upon. This meeting could further influence the geopolitical landscape amidst ongoing global tensions.
