The police had responded to 911 calls about a protest against ICE activities in the South Loop on June 4, claiming their presence was solely to maintain public safety.

The incident led to significant unrest within the community and among city officials. Ten individuals attending routine immigration check-ins were detained by federal authorities that day, sparking protests and drawing several aldermen to the scene. Alderman Anthony Quezada reported that many community members were anxiously waiting for updates on their detained family members. In a dramatic turn, three aldermen reportedly blocked an ICE van during the chaos.
