Deion Sanders Discusses Health Recovery Post-Bladder Cancer Battle

Deion Sanders’ Health Journey Post-Cancer

NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders recently shared insights into his health following a challenging battle with bladder cancer earlier this year. Speaking at the school’s media day, Sanders expressed his renewed vitality, stating, “I’m healthy, I’m vibrant. I’m my old self.” His commitment to maintaining his health is evident as he walks at least a mile around campus daily after practice. Sanders, who celebrated his 58th birthday on Saturday, had been absent from the team over the summer due to his health issues.

The Importance of Early Detection

In late July, Sanders announced that he had undergone surgery to remove his bladder after being diagnosed with cancer during the offseason. At a press conference, he emphasized the significance of regular health check-ups, saying, “Men, everybody, get checked out. Because if it wasn’t for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn’t have stumbled upon this.” He credited the timely intervention and care from medical professionals for his recovery.

Medical Insights into Sanders’ Diagnosis and Treatment

Colorado assistant athletic trainer Lauren Askevold and Dr. Janet Kukreja of UC Health provided a detailed timeline of Sanders’ diagnosis and treatment. Initially, an ACT scan was conducted to check on blood clots, which led to further examination by a urologist. Dr. Kukreja explained that Sanders had a high-grade bladder tumor that required surgical removal. Fortunately, the cancer had not invaded the muscle layer, allowing for successful treatment through bladder removal and reconstruction.

Reflecting on Life and Legacy

Sanders has been candid about the emotional toll of his health scare. In a video shared by his son Deion Sanders Jr., he revealed the difficult decision to draft a will amid concerns about his future. Despite these challenges, Sanders remains optimistic and focused on living life to the fullest.

Looking Ahead in His Coaching Career

Sanders took on the role of Colorado’s head coach before the 2023 season, bringing along his sons Shedeur and Shilo, as well as Travis Hunter from Jackson State. The 2024 season marked a significant achievement for Coach Prime, with Hunter winning the Heisman Trophy and the Buffaloes finishing 9-4 in the Alamo Bowl.
