PhD Scholar Rejects Tamil Nadu Governor at Convocation Ceremony

PhD Scholar’s Bold Move at Convocation

A significant incident unfolded at the 32nd convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University when PhD scholar Jean Joseph chose to bypass Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi while receiving her degree. The scholar, who completed her doctorate in Micro Finance, opted to accept her degree from the university’s Vice-Chancellor, N Chandrasekhar, instead. This decision was a deliberate act of protest against the Governor, whom she accused of acting against the interests of Tamil Nadu and its people.

Governor’s Reaction and University’s Response

The event, captured on video, shows Jean Joseph confidently walking past Governor Ravi, who was the chief guest. Initially, the Governor appeared to believe it was an oversight and attempted to engage with the scholar. However, her actions made it clear that her choice was intentional. A senior professor later revealed that they initially thought she preferred to receive her degree from the Vice-Chancellor due to personal preference, only realizing later that it was a purposeful snub.

Political Context and Tensions

Jean Joseph’s husband, Rajan, is affiliated with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a party currently in conflict with Governor Ravi. The DMK has accused him of delaying assent to legislative bills and attempting to undermine the elected government. This tension has been exacerbated by a recent Supreme Court ruling stating that Governors must act on the advice of the Council of Ministers. Despite this ruling, Governor Ravi referred a bill concerning the establishment of Kalaignar University to the President, further straining relations.

Historical Significance of the Incident

This incident marks a significant moment as it is the first time a student has publicly snubbed Governor Ravi during a convocation ceremony. Previously, Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Ministers have boycotted events presided over by him. Jean Joseph’s actions highlight ongoing political tensions and reflect broader dissatisfaction with the Governor’s role in state affairs.
