Director Aanand L Rai and actor Dhanush are contemplating legal action against the AI-altered re-release of their 2013 film, Raanjhanaa. The modification, which introduces an alternate happy ending, has sparked significant concern from the creators. Rai described this change as “a very dangerous precedent,” raising alarms about the potential implications for creative ownership in the film industry.
Aanand L Rai expressed his deep concerns about the impact of such modifications on his body of work. He stated that both he and Dhanush are actively seeking judicial remedies to protect their creative content from unauthorized alterations. The immediate focus is on addressing the changes made to Raanjhanaa, particularly its Tamil version, Ambikapathy, which was re-released by Eros International with an AI-generated climax on August 1.
Rai took to social media to voice his disapproval, describing the AI edit as “jarring and disturbing.” He lamented the alteration of a film that was crafted with care and collaboration, expressing his devastation over its unauthorized re-release. Similarly, Dhanush shared his distress on social media, stating that the new ending stripped the film of its essence.
In response to the backlash, Eros International Media Limited asserted their rights as the sole copyright owner. Pradeep Dwivedi, Group CEO of Eros Media World, emphasized that while they were not legally required to seek consent, they had communicated their creative intent post-production to Rai. Dwivedi criticized Rai’s public response as an attempt to divert attention from other legal issues he faces.
The controversy highlights a growing concern in the film industry regarding the use of AI in modifying creative works. Rai and Dhanush’s determination to pursue legal action underscores the potential threat such practices pose to artistic integrity. If left unchallenged, this could set a precedent that undermines creative ownership across the industry.
