Abhimanyu Easwaran, despite being a promising talent in Indian cricket, has yet to make his Test debut. His father, Ranganathan Easwaran, expressed frustration over his son’s repeated omissions from the playing XI during the India vs England series. Abhimanyu, who has an impressive first-class record with 7,841 runs at an average of 48.70, was initially called up to the Indian squad in 2021-22. However, since then, 15 players have debuted in Tests, leaving Easwaran waiting for his opportunity.
According to Ranganathan Easwaran, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir assured Abhimanyu that he would eventually get a fair chance to prove himself. The coaching staff also promised him a long run in the team. Despite these assurances, Abhimanyu has been waiting for four years to showcase his skills on the international stage.
Ranganathan Easwaran questioned the selection criteria, citing examples of other players like Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair who were given opportunities despite not having consistent performances. He argued that Abhimanyu’s experience on green tracks and his ability to hold innings make him a suitable candidate for the top order.
The senior Easwaran emphasized that IPL performances should not overshadow achievements in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy. He believes that selectors have faith in Abhimanyu’s abilities, as evidenced by his repeated inclusion in various teams over the years.
Abhimanyu was asked to play one down during his stint with India A in South Africa, where he scored a century against quality bowlers. However, his absence from recent domestic tournaments and lack of an IPL record have hindered his chances of making it to the national team. Ranganathan Easwaran hopes that these factors will not continue to impede his son’s cricketing career.
