Air India has embarked on a comprehensive $400 million fleet retrofit program, aiming to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency. This ambitious project will see upgrades across both widebody and narrowbody aircraft, ensuring that Air India maintains its competitive edge in the aviation industry. The national carrier’s initiative underscores its commitment to providing an elevated travel experience while adhering to the highest standards of technical excellence.
The retrofit program for Air India’s widebody fleet is already underway, with the first of 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, registered as VT-ANT, having arrived at Boeing’s California facility in July. A second aircraft is scheduled to follow in October, with both expected to re-enter service by December, featuring revamped interiors and state-of-the-art systems. The project is set for completion by mid-2027 and will introduce a three-class configuration comprising Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class seats.
The interior overhaul includes the installation of new seats in each cabin class, advanced in-flight entertainment systems, updated carpeting, curtains, upholstery, lavatories, and galleys. These enhancements align with Air India’s new product and customer experience standards. Additionally, the retrofit program will extend to 13 legacy Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with upgrades beginning in early 2027 and completion anticipated by October 2028 due to supply chain delays.
Air India has also launched a dedicated Reliability Enhancement Program for its 26 legacy B787-8 aircraft. This initiative aims to minimize operational disruptions by analyzing maintenance and configuration records and implementing recommended modifications based on Boeing’s service information bulletins. Furthermore, seven of these aircraft will undergo heavy maintenance (D-checks) at the California facility.
Parallel to its widebody efforts, Air India is retrofitting its 27 legacy A320neo aircraft. This program commenced in September 2024 and is on schedule for completion by September 2025. The addition of a third maintenance line at GMR’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Hyderabad has accelerated the process. To date, 15 A320neo aircraft have been retrofitted, with the remaining 11 expected to be completed by September 2025.
