Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown recently shared an unusual reason for not playing college football at the University of Georgia. Despite being recruited by Georgia, Brown chose not to commit due to a personal preference regarding the team’s uniform. During an appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take,” Brown, 28, revealed that he disliked wearing black socks, which influenced his decision.
Brown explained that he found the combination of black socks and black cleats unattractive, describing it as “hideous.” He expressed a preference for white socks, stating that they made him feel faster and smoother on the field. This seemingly minor detail played a significant role in his decision-making process during his recruitment.
Ranked as the No. 5 wide receiver prospect and No. 47 overall in the 2016 high school recruiting class, Brown had offers from several top programs, including Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State. Ultimately, he chose Ole Miss, where he could wear white socks and was part of a talented wide receiver group. In 2018, Ole Miss boasted three future NFL wide receivers on their roster.
Brown was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. His college teammates DK Metcalf and Elijah Moore were also drafted into the NFL in subsequent years. With both the Titans and now the Eagles, Brown has continued to wear white socks, maintaining his preference and performance on the field.
Regardless of sock color, Brown had an impressive season with the Eagles last year. In 13 regular-season games, he recorded 67 catches for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns. During the Eagles’ Super Bowl run, he added 12 catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns in four playoff games.
