The World Championship of Legends (WCL) faced a significant setback when the anticipated match between India and Pakistan was called off due to political tensions. Former Indian cricket stars, including Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, and Shikhar Dhawan, expressed their disapproval of playing against Pakistan amidst ongoing political strains. The match, scheduled for Sunday in Birmingham, was subsequently cancelled. The WCL organizers issued a statement on their social media platform, emphasizing their intent to foster “happy memories” through the event.
Amidst the cancellation controversy, a photograph of Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn with Pakistani cricket legend Shahid Afridi has gone viral on social media. Ajay Devgn, who is a co-owner of the WCL, was seen posing with Afridi, leading to widespread criticism from fans. Many have expressed their discontent, citing Afridi’s past remarks about the Indian army during border tensions.
The image causing a stir is not recent but dates back to the 2024 edition of the WCL. Ajay Devgn attended the final match at Edgbaston in Birmingham between India Champions and Pakistan Champions, which India won. Contrary to circulating claims, this meeting did not occur after any recent incidents involving border tensions.
Despite the cancellation of the league stage match, there remains a possibility for India and Pakistan to face each other in the semi-finals if both teams qualify. Kamil Khan, owner of Pakistan Champions, confirmed that the tournament will proceed as planned without any changes to the schedule. He acknowledged that if both teams advance to the semi-finals or finals, WCL might need to intervene to manage potential matchups.
