Indian cricketer Akash Deep, who recently stepped in as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, delivered a remarkable performance in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. His 10-wicket haul was instrumental in securing a 336-run victory for India. However, it was his heartfelt dedication of this achievement to his sister Jyoti, who is courageously fighting cancer, that truly touched fans worldwide. Jyoti, despite her battle with the disease, has been a pillar of strength for Akash, urging him to focus on his cricket and make the nation proud.
In an interview with India Today, Jyoti expressed her pride in her brother’s accomplishments. She recounted their last meeting at the airport before Akash’s departure for the England tour, where she reassured him of her well-being and encouraged him to concentrate on his game. Jyoti is currently undergoing treatment for stage three cancer, with doctors estimating another six months of therapy. Despite her health challenges, she finds immense joy in Akash’s success on the field, celebrating each wicket with enthusiasm.
Jyoti was taken by surprise when Akash publicly dedicated his performance to her after the match in Birmingham. She admitted that they had not planned to discuss her condition openly but was deeply moved by his gesture. It highlighted the strong bond they share and Akash’s unwavering support for his family during difficult times.
Reflecting on her medical journey, Jyoti shared that she was first hospitalized during the IPL season when Akash was playing for the Lucknow franchise. Despite his busy schedule, Akash made it a point to visit her whenever possible, demonstrating his commitment to family.
After the match, an emotional Akash reached out to Jyoti via video calls, reassuring her that the entire nation stood by them. He confessed that he could no longer contain his emotions and felt compelled to acknowledge her publicly. Jyoti described Akash as a rare and devoted brother who has taken on significant responsibilities within their family following the loss of their father and eldest brother.
