At an altitude of 15,000 feet in Ladakh, the Indian Army has successfully tested the Akash Prime missile, marking a significant advancement in India’s defense capabilities. The Akash Prime, an upgraded version of the Akash Mark 1 and Mark-1S systems, demonstrated its prowess by destroying two high-speed unmanned aerial targets. This test represents the first trial of Akash Prime at such high altitudes, showcasing its enhanced performance and adaptability.
The Akash Prime missile system is set to bolster the Indian Army’s arsenal by forming the third and fourth regiments of Akash missiles. It has been specifically modified to operate effectively at altitudes above 4,500 meters. Among its latest upgrades is an indigenously developed Radio Frequency seeker, which plays a crucial role during the missile’s terminal phase by emitting radio signals to track and destroy targets. This advancement ensures that the Akash Prime can effectively neutralize aerial threats with precision.
The Akash missile system, with a range of 20 kilometers, was developed over 15 years ago with significant contributions from Dr. Prahlada Ramarao, a former DRDO scientist. It is designed to offer short-range protection against aerial threats and includes built-in electronic countermeasures. The system’s configuration on mobile platforms enhances its maneuverability and effectiveness in diverse terrains and weather conditions.
Each launcher in the Akash system carries three missiles, operating in a ‘fire and forget’ mode. These missiles are approximately 20 feet long, weigh 710 kg, and carry a 60 kg warhead. The integral ramjet rocket propulsion system and onboard digital autopilot ensure stability and control throughout its operation. The system’s real-time, multi-sensor data processing capabilities allow for rapid target acquisition and neutralization. Looking ahead, the development of the Akash NG (Next-generation) variant promises an extended range, further enhancing India’s air defense capabilities.
During Operation Sindoor, the Akash missile system played a pivotal role as part of India’s multi-layered air defense strategy. It was instrumental in thwarting attempts by Pakistan to target Indian cities and defense establishments. The operation highlighted the effectiveness of India’s Integrated Air Command and Control System, which integrates data from various forces to combat aerial threats efficiently.
