Akhilesh Yadav has strongly criticized the central government’s handling of foreign policy following the recent increase in H-1B visa fees by the United States. He argued that the decision would directly hurt Indian technology professionals and accused the government of allowing India to become overly dependent on external powers.
In his remarks, Akhilesh Yadav described India’s foreign policy as “weak,” pointing to the rise in H-1B visa fees as evidence of its shortcomings. He suggested that such developments highlight a lack of effective negotiation and foresight in dealing with international partners, particularly when it comes to protecting the interests of Indian workers abroad.
The H-1B visa program has long been a crucial pathway for Indian engineers, IT specialists, and other skilled workers seeking opportunities in the United States. With higher fees now imposed, many professionals may face financial strain, while companies could reconsider hiring from India due to increased costs. Yadav emphasized that this change would not only affect individuals but also weaken India’s standing in global technology markets.
Beyond criticizing foreign policy, Yadav accused the central government of economic mismanagement. He argued that over-reliance on other nations for opportunities and growth has left India vulnerable to external decisions like the H-1B fee hike. According to him, a stronger domestic strategy is needed to ensure that Indian talent does not become excessively dependent on overseas employment prospects.
Adding to the criticism, Pawan Khera questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence regarding actions taken by then U.S. President Donald Trump that affected Indian workers abroad. Khera suggested that a more assertive response was expected from India’s leadership at a time when policies directly impacting its citizens were being introduced overseas.
Rahul Gandhi had previously cautioned about such measures as far back as 2017, noting that changes in U.S. immigration policies could create challenges for Indian professionals. His earlier warning was cited as an example of how these issues were foreseeable but not adequately addressed by those in power at the time.
The debate around the H-1B visa fee hike has reignited broader discussions about India’s economic resilience and diplomatic strategies. Critics argue that without stronger domestic job creation and more assertive international engagement, India risks leaving its workforce exposed to unpredictable global shifts. The issue underscores ongoing concerns about balancing international relations with safeguarding national interests at home.
