A tragic incident unfolded in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where a 25-year-old American tourist from New York, Kevin Mares, was fatally shot. The shooting occurred early Sunday morning in the La Perla area, a location with a notorious history of violence. Mares was visiting Puerto Rico to attend a concert by popular artist Bad Bunny, whose residency had recently commenced.
The unfortunate event took place at a nightspot known as “Refuge for Mistreated Men” in the coastal community. According to police reports, an argument broke out among several individuals near Mares, leading to one person drawing a gun and firing shots. Mares was hit on the left side of his abdomen and was immediately rushed to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities still seeking more information about the suspect involved in the shooting. Sgt. Ruiz mentioned that details are scarce at this point. The La Perla area has been known for its violent past, particularly as a former hub for heroin distribution, which federal agents targeted in a significant raid back in 2011.
Kevin Mares is remembered fondly by family and friends as a “deeply loved son” and “devoted friend.” A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support his funeral expenses, highlighting his kind nature and adventurous spirit. Mares had plans to propose to his girlfriend of six years and was known for his unwavering commitment to family.
