A 47-year-old woman from Springfield, Illinois, named Mindy Rasmussen, embarked on a remarkable journey from the United States to Pakistan to marry Sajid Zeb Khan, a 31-year-old man she met online. Their relationship began nearly a year ago on Facebook, where they engaged in regular chats that blossomed into video calls and eventually led to love. After proposing to Mr. Khan and securing the approval of both families, Ms. Rasmussen decided to travel thousands of miles to Pakistan’s Upper Dir district to unite with her beloved.
Earlier this month, Ms. Rasmussen arrived in Pakistan on a 90-day visit visa. In a significant step towards embracing her new life, she converted to Islam and adopted the name Zulekha. Her arrival at Islamabad International Airport was met with warmth and affection as Mr. Khan greeted her with flowers. The couple then traveled to his hometown, where the local community extended traditional hospitality, showering Zulekha with gifts and celebrations.
The couple’s marriage was solemnized in a traditional nikkah ceremony in Upper Dir, adhering to local customs and Islamic traditions. The event attracted considerable attention in the region, with local police and family sources confirming the union. Zulekha expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome she received in Pakistan, describing the country as beautiful and peaceful. She praised the kindness and hospitality of the people, which far exceeded her expectations.
Zulekha shared that her family in the United States, including her father, older sister, and younger brother, were aware of her visit and fully supported her decision. “They know I’m here and are excited for me,” she stated. She also encouraged foreigners to visit Pakistan to experience its rich culture, hospitality, and natural beauty firsthand.
Zulekha described Sajid as a loving and humble man whose sincerity and respect deepened their bond. Meanwhile, Mr. Khan emphasized that Zulekha’s decision to convert to Islam and marry him was entirely her own choice, made without any pressure from him or his family. “She is an independent woman who can make her own decisions. We are getting married of our own free will,” he affirmed.
