The Indian armed forces are poised to receive a significant upgrade with the introduction of the AK-203 assault rifles, a modernized version of the renowned Kalashnikov series. These rifles, manufactured in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, can fire up to 700 rounds per minute and have an effective range of 800 meters. The AK-203, known as ‘Sher’ in India, is set to replace the aging Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) rifles, which have been in service for over three decades.
The production of these advanced rifles is being handled by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture established specifically for this purpose. Under a substantial contract valued at Rs 5,200 crore, IRRPL is tasked with supplying over six lakh rifles to the Indian armed forces. According to IRRPL chief Maj Gen SK Sharma, approximately 48,000 rifles have already been delivered. An additional 7,000 units are expected within the next two to three weeks, with a further 15,000 slated for delivery by December this year. The entire order is anticipated to be fulfilled by December 2030.
The AK-203 ‘Sher’ rifles boast several enhancements over their predecessors. They utilize a 7.62×39 mm cartridge compared to the INSAS’s 5.56×45 mm cartridge, providing greater stopping power. Each rifle can hold thirty cartridges in its magazine and weighs approximately 3.8 kg, lighter than the INSAS’s 4.15 kg. The compact design of the ‘Sher’ rifle measures 705 mm without a buttstock, significantly shorter than the INSAS’s 960 mm length.
These rifles are designed to enhance operational effectiveness in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. They will become the primary assault weapon for soldiers stationed along India’s northern and western borders, including critical areas such as the Line of Control and the Line of Actual Control. The introduction of the AK-203 is expected to significantly bolster India’s defense capabilities and provide a strategic advantage in maintaining border security.
