Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, has emphasized the need for India to leverage the opportunities arising from the “unintended consequences” of US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. These tariffs, which have escalated tensions globally, present a unique chance for India to enhance its appeal as a destination for global capital. Mahindra suggests that India must transcend incremental reforms and significantly improve the ease of doing business to attract international investments.
The recent increase in tariffs by the US, targeting Indian goods due to New Delhi’s continued imports of Russian oil, has been met with strong condemnation from India. The additional 25 percent duty, which was subsequently doubled to 50 percent, is expected to severely impact sectors such as textiles, marine, and leather exports. This move places India alongside Brazil in facing the highest US tariffs.
Mahindra proposes two key reforms to bolster India’s economic position. Firstly, he advocates for a radical improvement in the ease of doing business through a single-window clearance system for investment proposals. By aligning willing states with a national platform, India can demonstrate efficiency and predictability, making it an attractive partner for global investors. Secondly, Mahindra highlights tourism as an underutilized forex engine. He calls for accelerated visa processing and improved tourist facilities, suggesting the creation of dedicated tourism corridors that ensure security and hygiene. These corridors could serve as models for other regions, raising national standards and boosting employment.
Mahindra draws parallels with the European Union and Canada, noting their strategic responses to similar tariff challenges. The EU has adjusted its security and fiscal policies in response to tariffs, potentially revitalizing its economies. Meanwhile, Canada is dismantling internal trade barriers to enhance economic resilience. In conclusion, Mahindra urges India to turn these unintended consequences into transformative opportunities by prioritizing national growth and competitiveness.
