Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly planning to enter the New York City mayoral race as an independent candidate. This decision follows his significant defeat to democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in the recent Democratic primary. Cuomo’s anticipated candidacy, highlighted by NewsNation, where his brother Chris Cuomo serves as an anchor, positions him against incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who has also shifted to an independent run, Mamdani, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
Cuomo intends to request that all candidates not leading the race by mid-September agree to withdraw, according to NewsNation. A spokesperson for Cuomo indicated that an official announcement regarding his candidacy is forthcoming. Despite remaining on the ballot as an independent after the primary, Cuomo has yet to confirm if he will actively campaign. He expressed a desire to analyze rank choice voting results and consult with colleagues before deciding on his next steps.
Zohran Mamdani’s unexpected victory has placed Democrats in a challenging position. His platform includes raising income taxes on high earners, establishing government-run grocery stores, and using public funds for universal childcare. These positions have sparked debate within the party. Mamdani’s opposition to Israel has also drawn attention, contrasting with Cuomo’s pro-Israel stance, which has garnered support from related donors.
Mamdani has received endorsements from prominent figures such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Adriano Espaillat, strengthening his campaign. He is also seeking support from labor and teachers unions in New York City. Recent polls indicate a tight race, with Cuomo trailing behind Mamdani, Sliwa, and Adams in a competitive battle for third and fourth place.
Cuomo’s political career has been marred by controversy, including multiple sexual harassment allegations that led to his resignation as governor in 2021. Although he denied any wrongdoing, he apologized for making people feel uncomfortable. Additionally, Republicans have criticized him for allegedly mishandling COVID-19 death data during his tenure.
