A disturbing series of antisemitic incidents in Australia has left the Jewish community in Melbourne on edge, prompting urgent calls for action from local authorities. The first attack occurred at the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, where assailants set a fire outside the synagogue’s exterior doors. Inside, around 20 worshipers were gathered for a Shabbat dinner. The quick response from the fire brigade prevented what could have been a devastating event, reminiscent of last year’s unsolved firebombing of the Adas Israel Synagogue.
Later that evening, an Israeli-owned restaurant named Miznon became the target of another violent attack. Approximately 20 masked individuals stormed the establishment, chanting anti-Israel slogans and causing chaos by throwing chairs and glassware. This terrifying incident left diners scrambling for safety. Although one protester was arrested by Victoria Police, they were subsequently released with a summons.
In addition to these attacks, Victoria Police are investigating a third incident involving arson and vandalism. Offenders set fire to three vehicles, completely destroying one, and spray-painted a nearby wall. While police have not confirmed if the graffiti was antisemitic, they acknowledged that all three incidents contained elements suggestive of antisemitism.
Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), condemned these acts and called on Australians across the political spectrum to denounce such crimes. He emphasized that those who engage in violence and destruction cannot be appeased and must face legal consequences. The rise in antisemitic attacks has also drawn international attention, with Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar urging the Australian government to take stronger measures against this growing threat.
The ECAJ reported 2,062 antisemitic incidents in Australia between October 2023 and September 2024, highlighting an alarming trend that demands immediate attention from both local and national authorities.
