In the wake of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash, aviation experts in India are voicing concerns over the investigation’s direction and perceived bias against pilots. Captain Sam Thomas, leader of the Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA India), expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing narrative that seems to unfairly target pilots. He criticized the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) report for lacking input from qualified experts and for its speculative nature.

Concerns Over Speculative Reporting

Captain Thomas highlighted the issue of speculation in media coverage, noting that while investigative journalism can involve conjecture, it should not come from unqualified individuals posing as experts. He pointed out inconsistencies in the narrative, which shifted from bird strikes to overloading and other theories over consecutive days. Thomas emphasized that such speculation undermines the credibility of the investigation and unfairly implicates pilots without substantial evidence.

Criticism of Report Handling and Release

The aviation expert also criticized the handling and release of the AAIB report, suggesting it appeared to be influenced by external pressures. He noted inaccuracies in basic details, such as pilot license information, which raised doubts about the report’s overall reliability. Thomas called for a thorough review of the digital flight data recorder (DFDR) to provide a more accurate account of events.

International Media’s Role in Shaping Perceptions

Thomas addressed a Wall Street Journal report that questioned pilot actions, suggesting that international media might have been misinformed. He argued that better control over information dissemination could prevent misleading narratives from taking hold. Thomas expressed concern that such narratives contribute to negative perceptions of Indian pilots globally.

Drawing parallels with past incidents like the Boeing 737 MAX crashes, Thomas underscored the importance of transparent investigations free from vested interests. He criticized the lack of accountability in previous cases and urged for more rigorous scrutiny to prevent similar tragedies. The Air India Boeing 787 crash occurred shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport, resulting in 260 fatalities.
