Professor Muhammad Yunus, leading Bangladesh’s interim government, has embarked on a unique diplomatic initiative known as ‘mango diplomacy’ with India. This gesture comes shortly after the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry expressed India’s willingness to engage in discussions with Dhaka in a “conducive” environment. As part of this initiative, Bangladesh has dispatched a consignment of 1,000 kilograms of the renowned ‘Haribhanga’ mango variety to New Delhi. According to an official from the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, the mango consignment is scheduled to arrive in the Indian capital on Monday. This initiative follows a meeting between PM Modi and Professor Yunus in April during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. It marked their first direct interaction since the fall of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. During this meeting, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a democratic and stable Bangladesh, emphasizing a people-centric approach that has historically benefited both nations.

Extending Diplomatic Outreach

In addition to sending mangoes to PM Modi, the Yunus government is also extending this diplomatic gesture to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. The Haribhanga mangoes are considered a premium variety in Bangladesh, symbolizing the country’s rich agricultural heritage.
