Bengaluru witnessed a significant enhancement in its public transport system as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated Yellow Line of Namma Metro. This new line stretches 19.15 kilometers, connecting RV Road in South Bengaluru to Bommasandra in the east. Constructed at a cost of Rs 7,160 crore, the corridor features 16 elevated stations and is designed to accommodate up to eight lakh commuters daily.
The Yellow Line is set to transform connectivity to key areas such as Silk Board Junction, BTM Layout, Electronic City, and Bommasandra Industrial Area. These regions are home to major employers like Infosys, Biocon, and TCS. By linking residential neighborhoods directly with tech parks and manufacturing zones, the line is expected to alleviate traffic congestion at notorious choke points like the Silk Board junction, significantly reducing travel time for commuters.
Commercial operations will commence on Monday, August 11. Initially, three driverless trains will run every 25 minutes from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm. As more trains are introduced later this month, the frequency is expected to improve to every 20 minutes.
The fare for a one-way journey will range from Rs 10 to Rs 90, aligning with existing Namma Metro pricing. For instance, traveling from RV Road to Jayadeva will cost Rs 10, while the longest route from Whitefield (Purple Line) to Bommasandra (Yellow Line) will be Rs 90.
The Yellow Line includes stations such as RV Road (interchange with Green Line), Ragigudda, Jayadeva Hospital (future interchange with Pink Line), BTM Layout, Central Silk Board, HSR Layout, Oxford College, Hongasandra, Kudlu Gate, Singasandra, Hosa Road, Electronic City-I, Konappana Agrahara, Huskur Road, Hebbagodi, and Bommasandra.
The new line will cut peak-hour travel time to Electronic City by approximately half—from 1.5-2 hours by road to about 45 minutes.
During the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi also flagged off the Bengaluru-Belagavi Vande Bharat Express and laid the foundation stone for Phase 3 of Namma Metro. This expansion will add another 44.65 kilometers at a cost of Rs 15,610 crore and is projected to benefit 25 lakh residents in southern Bengaluru. The event took place at the International Institute of Information Technology campus in Electronics City.
